Depends on how noisy is the area you plan to use them in. While I've never used the sony's you are interested in, It generally works pretty well. My personal preference would be to use a pair of closed-ear headphones with no noise cancellation, but different strokes for different folks.

Why not see if he would let you try them. I would personally think the Audio-Technica would be the better choice, the question, is it worth $100 over what you've already got. Everyone's personal taste will vary.

Well, the main problem is the yamaha receiver has no powered sub out. With your sub and that receiver, you will need another amp to drive the sub. It also doesn't look like that receiver likes 4ohm loads, which some of your speakers seem to have. I'd probably keep looking...
