    Good to have some AAA controllers for the PC. It would be good to see Tom's review PC controllers. They can start with the ridiculously short range of the "wireless" Logitech F710. I get about 2-3 feet. Plus its goofy analog sticks aren't worth diddly in Dirt 3, among other games.

    When I was in high school (1995), I played around with Autodesk Animator. I think they have rolled that program's features into their more comprehensive modeling suites such as 3DS Max and Maya. Make sure to ask for a student discount, because these are $$$.

    MS Flight Simulator X is CPU-bound. That means to buy the fastest, most powerful Haswell processor you can afford (Core i5 or i7). Discrete graphics would also be helpful.

    I don't know that background processes matter much to a modern CPU. My 5-yr old Q6600 fluctuates between 0-2% at idle. That's running virus protection and the rest of full-blown Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.

    You will appreciate the higher resolution and larger screen size of the Lenovo, though power draw might be a concern. Better bring your extension cord!
