Background Hiss - Do I Need a DAC?

If you are having noise problems a DAC or sound card won't eliminate noise and might make it worse. Analog stuff. Maybe the hiss is coming from that particular recording. Is the hiss issue present on all recordings? When one gets a better playback device more imperfections are revealed. Welcome...

Are old operating systems like 2000 and XP actually faster?

Yes, of course the same way a 1948 Packard is faster than a new Bugatti Veyron. W.P.

    What amp/receiver do i need?

probably the best way is to run an HDMI cable to an A/V receiver and then power the towers. For $100 new is probably tough. Maybe look at used receivers. That has worked for me with a 5.1 JBL system and another of my systems for 8 years. W.P.

PC + Receiver Setup. DVI for video to Monitor. HDMI to Receiver for Audio at the same time. Is this possible?

Well that sure tells you something like there is a problem with the receiver or those connections. You are not connecting the dots. Here is a last shot for you. Go to the Realtek site and find the HDMI audio driver. This worked for one machine here. I think you have bigger problems with the...

PC + Receiver Setup. DVI for video to Monitor. HDMI to Receiver for Audio at the same time. Is this possible?

Don't run the video through the receiver. One output to the monitor for video, another to the receiver for audio. Sometimes the devices may be listed slightly differently than what you expect to see. If you have a problem with a graphics card, cables, or other hardware not functioning properly...

PC + Receiver Setup. DVI for video to Monitor. HDMI to Receiver for Audio at the same time. Is this possible?

Very easy I have been doing that for 6 years on two machines.. The graphics card and OS sees it as two monitors, (two outputs). Set the monitor as primary # 1. You have to go into manage audio devices and set the receiver as default audio device. Done. W.P.

PC peripherals adding noise to amplified audio

Tough call. Something in the analog chain is the issue. Digital is noise free, analog isn't. 1s and 0s ya know. You have to isolate the component that is introducing the noise and without an oscilloscope that is difficult other than swapping out individual components til you find the offender...

PC peripherals adding noise to amplified audio

That sounds like noise is being introduced somewhere in your analog chain, not the PC. Maybe the audio jack. As a test do you pick up noise when connecting directly to the mobo out for the headphones? W.P.

No audio in right ear of new set of headphones *only when plugged into stereo system*

No I can't elaborate just cuz. Not all audio jacks are wired the same, mostly on older equipment before standardizations. Apple was good at messin stuff like that as with others with propitiatory connectors. Some simple thing is out of sync though. W.P.
