It is getting audio over USB. If Windows is configured to send 7.1 over that output then you should be fine. Either way it is only going to be simulated surround sound anyway.

Have you tried a multichannel source? If you're using a stereo source (most music is stereo and many games are set to stereo by default), then you will only get sound out of the front 2 drivers.

Just pick up a cheap sound card if you really want to improve the sound quality. You may get some noticeable improvement or you may not. Something like a Xonar DG or DGX would be more than enough for what you're trying to do.
