Right click on the sound icon in your taskbar at the bottom of your screen. Click "Recording devices". Make sure your microphone has a check mark next to it. If it doesn't, right click the microphone, and click "Set as Default Device".

I think I found it. Check here under AUDIO: http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=X54C It should say Realtek Audio. Download it from there and tell me what happens.

Have you looked at Dell's Inspiron series? I got a great deal with a laptop that was $500 on Christmas, with an Intel CORE i7 3632QM that ran at 2.2 GHz. It is pretty easy to carry around, along with some good power, and you can change the covers for style. :)
