Thanks for your help. I did try that but it turned out that holding the power button on the amp for 10 seconds was required to clear the error. Right as rain now.

If I unplug and plug back in I am able to turn it on from the button on the amp or the remote. Once it turns on the display says "Power On" and doesn't change. After that I can't even turn it off from the button or the remote and have to unlug it again to turn it off. It is a Pioneer VSX-1027. I...
