dated design? I don't really see this. And as an Apple user I cannot find any better streaming station at the moment. Event though I don't use iTunes that much the integration with iPads and iPhones is not better with any other device. Or does any other streaming box support display mirroring?

Did you try switching to projector mode with Windows-Key + P ? What happens if you go to system settings and select the TV as main monitor?

I don't expect a phone rather a tablet or sth similar size. Apple already showed how the future of gaming could look like with the iPad / Apple TV combination. So my guess: Gaming tablet with surpreme hardware and wireless display support :)

Can you try connecting your Desktop to a different TV? How long is you HDMI cable? Some components especially have issues with long HDMI cables. HDMI cables should not be longer than 10 meters for best compatibility (see http://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/faq.aspx#45)
