HDMI Output

I have an old Yamaha surround sound receiver (RX-V1) that doesn't have HDMI inputs. Is there a converter that can take HDMI output from a DVD player and convert it to an optical DVD input on the receiver? I don't want to lose audio fidelity if possible! Maybe it's time for a new receiver, but...
