Hi, a friend of mine wants to buy a new 17 inch gaming laptop (he had one before so he is used to the size and weight). He needed one with a 4k 60hz ips display. He has narrowed down his selections to:

1.MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro 4k http://
2.MSI GT73VR Titan SLI 4k http://
3.ASUS ROG GX701VI http://
4.Alienware 17 http://

Would someone rank these laptops based on the following specs please:

1.Gaming Performance on AAA games at 4k Ultra
2.Display accuracy
3.Aduio system
4.Keyboard
5.Storage
6.Ports
7.Ease of upgrade
8.Battery Life
9.Weight
10.Dimensions

To him, there is no difference in price of the four laptops. He also does not mind loud fans (he actually kinds of like it). He is, however open minded if there are any better options out there. Thanks!

Asus doesn't actually make a laptop ... they are made in the same factory by the same OEM's as Toshiba, Apple, Dell and Acer ... so quality can be expected to be no better than the others.

As to the original question .... None of the above. Be aware that:

1. We don't as yet have a desktop GFX card that can power 4k at 60 fps in half today's big games. I'd strongly recommend 3k

2. With a mobile GFX card, the performance will be even slower.

3. The Pixel density on a 17" screen at 4k is 271.48, which is well beyond the human eye's ability to distinguish, the only real benefit from having 4k on such a small screen is being able to tell ya fiends "I have 4k". The 3K AUO screens are far higher quality...

4. Alienware laptops, back when they were a recognized make of quality products, had all their laptops built by Clevo; now thy are made by Dell's OEMs..

5. Asus laptops are made by Pegatron, most widely known as the parent company of AsRock, and Foxcon.

Alienware went to Clevo to make the stuff sold under the original Alienware Pre-Dell laptop for a reason.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/clevo-guide-v2-0-faq-and-reseller-info.91510/

CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc. They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.

6. Many of the brand names that peeps argue about "which is better" are often made on the same productions lines, with the same labor and most of the same parts:

Quanta sells to (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu and NEC
Compal sells to (among others) Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP/Compaq
Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) sells to Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP
Inventec sells to Toshiba, HP, Dell and Lenovo
Pegatron sells to Asus, Toshiba, Apple, Dell and Acer
Foxconn sells to Asus, Dell, HP and Apple
Flextronics (former Arima Computer Corporation notebook division) sells to HP

7. Like a desktop, we recommend that if you want a good gaming laptop, like a desktop it should be built using individual components you choose

This is something he might consider:

JackNaylorPE, thanks for your detailed reply. I do have a few things to say:

1. I made a mistake saying that he wants to play AAA games on ultra, he is not a heavy gamer and will be content playing medium to high settings.

2. Got it.

3. Thats the reason why he wants a 4k display.

4-6. Got it.

7. My friend lives in Taiwan and he is used to going to the Asus or MSI store and getting his laptop there. He does not like buying laptops online. Hence why the choices I listed before.

Now, I am personally deciding whether or not I should get a Clevo P870KM1-G laptop. I have never used one, and would love to hear feedback from clevo users. I do have a question, when the advertisement on the Clevo webpage say that the laptop has desktop grade GFX's, are they real founders edition GFX's that are opened up and placed in the laptop or are they just a marketing gimic? Also, from what I read, Clevo does not directly sell their products. In the end, if I decided to pull the trigger and buy it, who should I buy it from? Sager? Origin PC? Digital Storm? Thanks

A few more questions:
1. Acording to the article JackNaylorPE referenced, quote:"4.) Upgradeability (Made Easy for Users): Clevo current high-end models are designed to specifically have their components (CPU, RAM, HDD, internal cards, and even the videocard) easily accessible for future upgrades." Does that mean, for the Clevo PG870KM1-G I can upgrade more than the memory and storage e.g. the CPU and GPU like a desktop?

2. On the Clevo website, it says the PG870KM1-G has desktop grade 1080, does that mean the 1080 is the same as a founders edition opened and placed in the laptop? Or is it just a marketing gimmick?

3.I have watched YouTube reviews about the PG870KM1-G, they say that by removing the bottom plate one can only reach 2 of the 4 ram slots and 2 of the 3 M.2 SSD slots. Is it possible to access the rest of the slots?

clevo p750dm2, p775dm3, p870km, p870km1 have a desktop cpu and a mxm upgradable gpu.
there are 4 ram slots and you need to remove keyboards for upgrading the rest of the ram

here you can see the mxm gpu of a clevo p870

these gpu are not desktop but their performances are really close to desktop gpus

4. I don't thing understand ... the question to be asked here is why spend a lot of extra money for a lesser quality panel with a pixel density that, under no circumstance are you capable of observing a difference ?

As to the question, it used to mean that instead of using a mobile series GPU, they are using the same GPU as the desktop version. Back in the day, the mobile versions were maybe 70-75% as fast as the desktop versions. Today, there is very little difference (probably < 10%) between the mobile and the desktop versions.

We have been buying our lappies form LPC Digital for about 8 years. Your relationship with a seller is only as good as the person on the other end of the phone. With most vendors, that's a different person every time. With LPC you deal with the same person thru parts selection, ordering, negotiating a price, troubleshooting, repairs, whatever.

So far I guess we've had about a dozen with only one premature failure.... the result of a cocoa spill. We use them as CAD workstations as well as when folks are out of Town on distant projects, they are used for entertainment in the off hours (read gaming, movies). Despite a custom water cooled desktop on my desk w/ twin GFX cards, I will often be in the mood to just kickback in a lazy-Boy and game on the lappie.

You can check out LPCs user satisfaction here:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/LPC_Digital_Inc

Again, and this you an see in the 2nd review, I haven't found anyone who matches LPC's pricing.

I always have ordered our lappies with an SSD only and then added a 7200 rpm SSHD for mass storage. I have upgraded the RAM and changed the CMOS battery. I used to ask a lot of questions about upgrading thinking what if and, as it turned out, 4 or 5 years down the line, it's still chugging along well enough and I have decided to go new rather than "improve one thing".

But I'd advise caution here as there are warranty issues involved when you open the chassis. With many resellers, you might not want to mention that you are going to do this yaself.
