2 old gateway solo 2550 laptops

Got these 2 laptops for my kids to play games on. They're running XP now. What do I need to do so they will connect to my wifi? Also, are hard drives swappable with others?

XP on kids computers unless they are very locked down is a bad idea, lots of security issues. For WiFi, if they don't have onboard wireless, get a USB WiFi dongle. Not sure what you mean about the hard drives, if they are both the same model, you can swap drives between them. Or are you asking if you can put a new drive in them?

Just wondering - some of the parts on a few of their computers only allow their brand of replacement part instead of interchangable.

Yes that may be the case at times, don't know about those gateway models.
