I also saw some minor artifacting when I unlocked my AGP 6800 GS. Never tried just the sahder though. WIll try that tonight and see if it works. Mine was a little shimmer on some surfaces. But I did find that I couldn't OC my card when the pipes were unlocked. It would crash.

OK - to clarify!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6800GS AGP is built on the same core as the AGP 6800GT and Ultra. At stock this card has 12 active pipes and 5 vertex shaders. Using Riva Tuner you can easily unlock 4 extra pipes and 1 shader to provide the 16x6 you see on the GT and Ultra. Clock speeds can be pushed higher on the GS but this all relates to the quality of the stock cooler or aftermarket cooler you add on.
Although unlocking is easy, there is no standard for success on the unlock - by this I mean its a 50:50 of whether you can unlock without artifacting. From personal experience I saw artifacting in Lost Coast with my 6800GS OC (BFG) unlocked (with just vertex shader opened I saw no artifacting). I have to wonder how many people really see NO artifacting after unlocking.

The PCI-E 6800GS is based on different architecture and the extra pipes CANNOT BE UNLOCKED. You can still do some substantive overclocking if you know your stuff.

Wtf? 6800GS is not based on the architecture of the 6800gt/ultra series, as it is based on 90nm and the ultras/gt's are on 130nm. The reason the PCIE version can't be unlocked is because it was cut with lazers to disable such unlocking. I have a very powerful aftermarket cooler and I assure you I can't get 500mhz core speeds. An unlocked gs would actually be more powerful than a 6800ultra, however.

Update...I just saw artifacts for the first time, playing flight sim 2004. Right away I relocked the masked pipes, and returned to flight sim, and the artifacts were truely gone.

So, mine was imperfect.

Hey AK47,

I am trying to make it easier for those new to the 6800GS to understand and you've gone ahead and confused them all over again. Please appreciate the HUGE difference between the AGP and PCI-E versions of the 6800GS. Suffice to say AGP= unlockable & OCable, PCI-E = non-unlockable but still OCable.

I'm not too sure the AGP's are unlockable at all, after the whole unlocking of the 6800agp I suppose they patched it by laser cutting the pipes.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE AGP 6800GS ARE UNLOCKABLE! FFS!!!!!!!
I have one and yes they are ALL unlockable.....now whether the additional pipes are ok or result in artifacting is varied. PLEASE, if you do not believe me look elsewhere and check - you will find countless reviews showing this to be true. Try NewEgg and if that doesn't work take two bricks and clapped them together hard against anything you find between your legs. You see, sometimes the truth hurts ;)
Please do not keep writing statements that are inaccurate, if you find reference to alternate observations cite them otherwise ppl are just going to think you are an idiot.
THE PCI-E extra pipes were laser cut. If you don't know the difference between PCI-E and AGP please go and look it up to avoid confusing others!

how about those plain old 6800's from let say bfg, you can unlock the pipes and shaders, so why not a reg 6800 instead of a 6800gs?

agp of course

Nvidia isn't as stupid as we'd like to think. They want people to buy their expensive high end cards, rather than unlocking low end cards-so they disabled it (or tried to) on the newer chips. The gs came out about a year or so later than the average 6800, giving unlockers time to unlock and Nvidia time to block.

Guys, if we just use the words carefully, then we will be communicating.

Dekkard is right, the AGP 6800gs is unlockable. I've unlocked mine.

Its also true that for me at least one game showed artifacts, so I re-locked it.

What the overall success rate is would be interesting to know. If anyone has a stable AGP6800gs at 16x6, then its worth reporting the possibility on these boards.

Update, in case anyone cares...LOL

I've installed a new driver, and I suspect what I said before was artifacts may have been a conflict between the 81.98 driver and the game....

Now I'm running 83.90 driver, and I've re-unlocked the pipes....so far no artifacts. Half life 2 crashed, but that may be a driver conflict again. I wouldn't expect a crashing application to be due to unlocked pipes.

No artifacts.

mark5 numbers: locked: 4903 unlocked: 5594

cheers..Bob

Just got a EVGA 6800GS AGP yesterday. Used 83.90 drivers. Loaded Riva Tuner 2 and unlocked pipes and shader. They unlocked fine, but I had artifacts in multiple games. Damn Shame!

My Leadtec 6800 unlocked and overclocked great! O'h well, maybe a driver update, or I'll just be content with the O/C....

Yep, the AGP is 130nm and it is essentially the GT chip. It is unlockable. I have one, it is unlocked, and it has no artifacts.

Furthermore, I seriously doubt nvidia is going to take the time and energy to laser any chips so the pipes will be unlockable for the AGP GS. That is simply cost prohibitive.
