a headset with mic will work on a laptop just plugged in to the place marked for headsets?

My Dell laptop has only one place to plug in a headset. Will it work with a headset with mic?

Technically speaking, a 'headset' usually denotes headphones with microphone. This plug will be a multi plug, so your 'headset' plugs in there. if your headset has two plugs (one for headphones and one for microphone) you will need to get a converter lead that combines both into one.
