So my screen went black like 2 months after I bought it, laptop still works with an external monitor. I can also tell the screen in lit up black, almost like it dimmer, so its lit up black essentially, anyone know of a fix?

Solution
Well it depends on a few things.

First off, if it is new, or bought new, then it should be under warranty. If that is the case you need to contact the manufacturer about a repair or replacement.

If it isn't under warranty, or bought used, then try the following...

  1. Turn the laptop off (not sleep or hibernate but off).
  2. Connect an external monitor to the laptop.
  3. Turn on the external monitor.
  4. Turn on the laptop.

NOTE: You may have to press an "external monitor" button. Could be the f4 button or a button with two monitors on it, for the external monitor to work.

If you can see fine on the external monitor, then your attached display, or the ribbon cable that connects it, are your problem.

If you can't see on the external monitor at all, or the problem occurs on the external monitor as well, then it is probably the graphics card/GPU that is the problem, which may require the motherboard be replaced.

You may also want to try hitting CTRL + SHIFT + WIN + B to try and reset your graphics driver as another possible fix.

Solution
Before trying anything about parts, take note if the external monitor is using the integrated graphics or not. If it is, then it still could be the GPU that isn't working correctly.

As to the cable that connects the display, it will depend. Before opening it up, however, I have to ask if it is under warranty. If it is, then you need to contact the manufacturer about the problem, as opening it can void the warranty. If it isn't, then well it wouldn't matter. :)

The first thing to check on the cable is to make sure there isn't any damage. If any part is pinched, bent, torn, burnt, etc., then it should be replaced. If none of that shows, then I would suggest disconnecting it at both ends, carefully, and then reconnect it. If that doesn't resolve it, then you are looking at either replacing the cable, and should that not resolve it, then replacing the display should. Unless, of course, it is the GPU that is the problem.
