I WANT TO KNOW IF ITS POSSIBLE TO CONNECT TO CONNECT AN OPTICAL CABLE TO A HOME THEATER AMP FROM AN ALIENWARE M17X.IT CAME WITH A SMALL ADAPTER THAT PLUGS INTO THE SPDIF 3.5MM JACK ON THE LAPTOP.\

ALSO WANT TO USE THE LAPTOP WITH PS3 AS IT HAS HDMI IN,I WOULD LIKE THE SOUND TO PLAY THROUGH THE AMP ONTO ALL THE SATTELITES.

THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS.....

if you want any help at all, it would do you well to remember...

TYPING WITH CAPS LOCK ON IS CONSIDERED VERY RUDE.

in essence you are screaming at us.

with that said... you mentioned spdif and 3.5mm like they were the same port. spdif is an optical port which is sort of in the shape of a fat "D" while 3.5mm is a round port a good bit smaller in size. what exactly are you trying to describe?

yes, you can send a sound signal through spdif optical to a home theater receiver if it has spdif optical inputs. yes you can also connect it via a 3.5mm cable if your receiver has an aux in or other 3.5mm input however you will only get stereo sound instead of surround sound.

hook up the ps3 to the receiver directly. your receiver should have hdmi input. if not use the composite cable setup.
