I am planning to buy a laptop, unfortunately I am not on very high budget right now, can go up to 850$.
I am mostly considering Asus mainly because I heard very good opinions about it and I am lately very disappointed with my Dell XPS 14z, for the specification it has, I think it is highly under performing, plus over heating is a huge issue.
I was looking at this asus: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9545231&CatId=7669
Is it worth buying?
Another ones I consider: http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_369&item_id=069521

I need this laptop for academic work, so I will be using Word, pdf, lots of open tabs, Matlab. I will not use it for games at all.

Could you please help me to choose the best laptop?

I think the 1st link is the best of them all, you'll get a little bit of a speed boost if you picked this one from your list:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9516351&CatId=7669

Though the screen resolution is very low and it only somes with 6GB of RAM, I've been using a laptop with same size and resolution on the screen, meh it works, but for multitasking you'll much rather have a 1080p screen and +2GB RAM.

But overall i think a slightly higher budget will bring...
Of those two i would probably pick the 1st link, here is why:

1: the CPU is slightly faster¨
2: +250GB storage
3: +2GB RAM, which i think is important for your use

But as you can see on one if not both pages, "Black Friday" is right around the corner, which is a time of the year where every store puts huge discounts on lots of PCs, TVs, Hardware and more. So you should wait and see tomorrow, you might find a >1000$ laptop under 850$.

I am a little bit confused with your answer. I posted 5 links to different laptops, so not sure which two you are referring to :/
Indeed black Friday is coming soon and I will definitely wait for it, thanks for pointing it out!

Black Friday will lower the prices so they're within your budget, instead of you raising your budget. 😉

Just the one rockie_ listed is almost twice as fast, it does though have a powerful GPU which you won't need at all. So finding a pc with something as fast of a CPU but no GPU or a weaker one, might save you some money.
