Question Android 7.1.1 remove non gmail account

I want to remove an non gmail account from my Samsung J3 Android 7.1.1 phone. I get to the 'Remove account' question and it says :"Removing this account will delete all of its messages, contracts, and other data from the phone!' I do NOT want to remove contacts. If I confirm this will it really delete my contacts or just remove the e-,mail account? Thanks for suggestions!

The mail account usually has contacts like mail addresses. If you delete this mail account and you only used it for mails, the phone contacts of other accounts won´t be deleted. If it´s the only account, then all conatcts will be deleted as well. You can backup the data before trying to delete it, to be safe.
