As an iPhone user I still think this is good news since it will put a bit more pressure to open up their architecture even more than the 1.0 to 2.x update did. I recently played with the G1 and it's not a bad first attempt. I think the iPhone still is easier to use, but could see that the gphone will catch up quickly especially with Google's open architecture and free services. (Try to integrate anything with the iPhone calendar and you will understand why Google's open API may quickly become a strong contender even for business users.)

heh the day apple opens up thier products will be the day microsoft opens directx. Though i really dont like the android this should push smart phones forword. So far out of all the smart phones i have played with my storm has been the best one. Defanitly wont be upgrading to a new phone with out a highlight click activate touch screen.

At least the writing is grammatically and technically correct. Go Marcus! Seriously, Elsewhere on TH, I see so much poor writing and outright incorrect grammar and word usage, slang, etc., missing spaces is a minor problem.

Yeah it's not the worst case of typo I've seen on TH but still, we would expect a bit more from a renown editor. There are pretty good correctors out there.

Alas, Windows Mobile is the Windows of mobile OSes. I chose to go with the Omnia because T-mobile has no service in my area and AT&T covers the metro areas with 3G but EDGE between them. (However, I'll secretly hope with you that Android lives up to its name and secretly creates duplicates of its competitors and replaces them. *grin*)

Lets face it, in the US the cell phone carriers want to control their phones - after all, what else do they really have to compete on otherwise?

Android is the antithesis of what they desire with its open platform let-anyone-design-applications framework. Look at the apps that are available - stuff that no PC user would pay for goes for $5 to $30 on a mobile phone.

I just don't think Apple will be able to keep up with the more Open Source Software type folks.

We've seen MS fight Apple and the OSS groups, and Apple fight other proprietary phone manufactures and mobiles OSes...but I don't think I can remember anything that involved this kind of market share in any industry...

I mean the *nix coders of the world haven't overrun MS yet on PCs...but this is phones and the iPhone only has a few years head start (and people seem obsessed with buying a phone like once a year or more anyway). I know there is windows mobile to consider but...well, I use it every day and I still don't put much stock in it.

I mean can anyone else think of a time when OSS went up against anything at this magnitude (except windows)? They don't seem to have such a drastic usability issue this time around either! Maybe I've just gone stupid but you get a few OSS based models out fighting the iphone and that seems like very new territory. I don't think Apple and the App store will keep up.

Not only that, but consider the "netbook" market. Apple has nothing to offer, and it's proven to be lucrative (at least for the time being and near future). Free Software OSes on phones and mini-laptops, and those "Splashtop" features on some motherboards, maybe a bit more public advertising from companies like Dell and HP for their Linux-based desktops and laptops, the average consumer might start to notice. We could conceivably get to the point where the desktop PC is the only ecosystem where *nix isn't a power player, and then it might only be a matter of time.

The desktop pc is the only place where games are a major concern. I been waiting for nix to get there since xp came out and i was reading about this somewhat new os. its been some time now im not going to hold my breath anymore.
