Android Malware and Viruses?

So I've been thinking of switching to a Galaxy 4. But I've read so much about malware and viruses on the Android OS. What's the deal? Do regular users have to look out for? How do you protect yourself? Are there apps you can get like anti-virus on a computer?

it is actually none if you are a smart person who reads the app description and view reviews from apps, some of junky app don't have much downloads and have many bad reviews. I only download apps that I know, like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. Not like many other people that just click-and-download.

Btw Google have created some like Antivirus inbuilt with Android devices, also you can download apps like Avast, etc.
