Antivirus for lots of mods and downloads

I'm download mods a lot and am getting a better custom built pc and would like to know if avast free would be good enough to protect me if not what will ( can be free and paid) thanks

So someone is to recommend a suitable free antivirus based on the description of 'download mods a lot'....?

What kind of 'mods'? What OS? What is your backup capability? Tolerance for warning popups? (I use Personal Firewall 7 in conjunction with my AV which does not encompass a firewall functionality, and, although it gives lots of 'allow/block' popups, I still prefer the control it allows, knowing that if I don't click 'allow', nothing happens!)
