Antivirus

Hi I would like to know witch antivirus is the best (low ressources usage, good protection and low cost).
I am using InoculateIT Personnal Edition, a free antivirus (and free support and update) but they stop their free service the 15 May 2002 so I need to change.

I'm running WinXP with Norton AntiVirus 8.0. I find it to be pretty good.

Norton 2k2 here, dont even know its there (except if doing a full scan of course). Live update automatic and fast, no probs at all.

If they squeeze olives to get olive oil, how do they get baby oil?

Norton Antivirus 2002 hands down. McAfee, has some issues with its Active X object components conflicting with IE (causes stalls, and lockups). When you have to uninstall McAfee, you will need special instructions, because it attaches itself everywhere (just like a virus). My vote is for Norton Antivirus 2002. I switched and am glad I did.

Norton Antivirus. I'm using NAV 2000 and the auto-protect that runs in the background uses 1.4 megs of ram.

Have you got anymore info on this? I have a friend with several i.e. issues like the ones you mention- she has mcaffee

Norton is great for home, but we use Trend at work and I've been very, very impressed by it.

The best thing I can tell you is, to tell your friend to completely uninstall McAfee, which means using, "Add Remove Programs", removing Active X objects, deleting internet temporary files, deleting temp files, deleting Folder "MCBIN" in the Windows directory, and then doing a through search of Registry to eradicate the demon (in about that order). After they are sure McAfee is gone, see if the problems are gone. If that does it (which it did for me) they will welcome the switch to Norton Antivirus 2002.

Here is a <A HREF="http/www.mcafee.com/support/cust_serv/faqs/tech_support/faq_technical.asp?questions=install" target="_new">Link</A> to the McAfee instruction. I recommend that they read and follow the unistall instruction completely. Hope this works for your friend!

One other thing I forgot to mention is to make sure your friend DOES NOT have any other McAfee product installed or any other antivirus programs. This will cause similar problems of the same nature. (McAfee is well known to include a complimentary version of their software bundled in other programs, i.e., Windows Plus, First Aid 2000... and some others). If they find that there is another problem other than McAfee, then they can safely do a clean install of that evil program.

Trend PC-Cillin has many bugs & a very bad interface ergonomy. but just IMO.

try NIS (Norton Internet Security). i think we can considerate it as a sort of <i>Best Of</i>.

your have on the package NAV
very good Firewall
emails & attached files check also for virus
autoupdate to retreive new virus signatures
& others... (i dont remember all in detail)

& everything with no bugs & very less cpu use.

it seems to be totally transparent.

i even believe that he can check java applets, OCX objets & others which can be load by your browser transparently for you but not for it.

i tried several antivirus (eSafe,Panda,McAfee,PC Cillin) but i return always on Norton.
