I am seriously considering the TOSHIBA Satellite M645-S4055 because of the i5, the 500 GB HD, and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with Optimus technology. I want to use it when I travel for business and light gaming and I expect the battery life to be decent because of the Optimus technology. I will be using the laptop for photoshop, storing some audio files, e-mail, watching movies, and burning CDs

Should I consider anything else in the under $1000 range with the same or better components?

Virtually the same specs for WAY cheaper. (It is a 15.6" instead of a 14" though, but the Acer, strangely enough, weighs LESS. That's right, the 15.6" weighs LESS than the 14"!)

Curiously enough, both the Toshiba and the Acer have an i5 450M but the Newegg description for the Acer says Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz whereas the Toshiba says Turbo Boost up to 2.53 GHz. Typo or fact?

But if your budget is up to $1000, you can do MUCH better than the M645-S4055 in terms of performance:

That's almost identical to my Qosmio F60, which plays every game I've thrown at it with medium to very high settings at 1366x768. Basically you're getting less RAM and hard disk but a slightly faster CPU.

Should be plenty fast enough for Photoshop though if that's going to be your primary use you might want to look at something with an i7 instead.
