I need a laptop for video editing and my videos are only 5 mins to 20 mins long .

You don't need gaming GPU to do video editing. Put your money toward better CPU, RAM and (fast) SSD, with HDD for storage.
Good screen is a must, if you want to see what you're doing (I have no idea how good there Pavilion's are).

Thank you for life saving tip. Oh I spent 2 days (including full night) researching and found these 3 laptops & wondering these are solid for video editing, thanks again.

Personally I want to buy HP laptop because of their good quality, otherwise there is no specific reason. But HP doesn't allow to customize the laptop to choose component as per requirement.

The reason I shortlisted them because they have 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor, it's new processor so I thought it'll be good for video editing. I need to edit 20 mins video so I though 2 cores processor will do.

Can you select any better option for me by keeping my requirement in mind from

I would suggest a laptop with an i7 CPU (vs the i5). Hyperthreading in the i7 will help speed up the video encoding process. Also, 16GB RAM and a 500GB or larger SSD.

So you meant to say "7th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor" isn't a good processor for video editing, isn't?

1. Could you please suggest me a few:
i5 laptop processors and i7 laptop processors which are good for youtube video editing (20 mins long videos)

2. How much RAM is required and which frequency is preferred (i know it'd tricky question buts still suggest me, I'd conclude it as per situation while finding laptop?

3. Is SSD required? If so can I go for 128 SSD (for OS + 500GB/1TB HDD for storing data?

4. Do I need a GPU for video editing, if so which one you recommend? (As @Alabalchoa said the configuration which I suggested had unnecessary GPU because it was meant for gaming)

Based on your recommendation. I'll find the laptop in my region

I want to spend money wisely & seek your guidance.

I will appreciate if you answer them.

All dual core i5 CPUs like the i5-7200u will have Hyper Threading (HT). The basic difference between dual core i5 and i7 CPUs is that the i7 CPU generally has slightly higher clockspeeds and some i7 models may have a slightly more powerful Intel HD graphics core.

The only i5 CPUs that do not have HT are the quad core i5 CPUs; similar to the desktop i5 CPUs which are all quad core CPUs with no HT.

As for the nVidia 940mx (or any dedicated GPU)... It can help improve video editing performance if you are using a lot of special effects to connect various video clips together into one video file. The more you use them the more likely you will benefit from having a dedicated GPU. But if you don't use much of them (which I suspect is the case) then the integrated GPU will be more than enough to handle occasional special effects usage.

Video encoding is a CPU intensive process and therefore the CPU typically handles it. However, modern Intel HD graphic core has something called Quick Sync which allows the Intel HD graphics core to handle the video encoding process instead of the CPU. It can do it much faster (1/4 of the time or less compared to using a CPU), but when compared side by side to a video encoded using a CPU, the video encoding with Quick Sync does not look quite as good. For professional video (meaning you want to sell it) Quick Sync should generally be avoid since very high video quality is important. On the other hand for personal usage such as home videos or videos uploaded to Youtube, Quick Sync should be fine.

Another downside to Quick Sync is that the software you are using to edit / encode videos must support Quick Sync.

Of the 5 laptops #5 is the best for editing videos because it has a quad core i7 CPU since video editing is very CPU intensive. The GTX 960m will generally be used very little unless you include a lot of special effects to transition between individual video clips. It's great for playing games though.

Laptops #2 - #4 are essentially the same. The only difference are the amount of RAM / a SSD drive. Extra RAM is useful for large projects, but you can always add in your own RAM if you were to purchase a laptop with only 8GB of RAM. The SSD does not really affect video editing performance; it can make loading video files into the editor faster, but you will not notice much of a difference unless you are working with very large video sizes (which means 8GB of RAM is not enough). It will make the laptop feel more responsive as long as the programs and files you are loading are on the SSD and not the HDD.


Laptop #1 is the weakest of the 5 laptops. the 6th generation i7-6500u will likely only be slightly slower than the newer i7-7500u CPUs. It is still a powerful dual core CPU though so maybe it will take 5% - 10% longer to edit a video compared to the i7-7500u... I don't know since I have not seen any benchmarks. The Radeon R7 M440 is probably around the performance of the nVidia 920m so it is a bit more powerful than the Intel HD 620, but definitely weaker the nVidia 940mx and anemic compared to the GTX 960m.


If money is no object, then go with #5. Laptop #4 would be in second place because of the 16GB of RAM and the 128GB SSD. But generally speaking laptops #2 - #4 should have similar performance when processing the video. Laptop #1 would be the budget way to go since I assume it is the cheapest of them, the R7 M440 should be good enough if you do not do a lot of special effects.

The best would also be to have had 7200rpm because with out a fast drive it really hard.i have the experience.(or get 1tb ssd..)
