Applications for hardware testing

I would like some information on good, preferably free apps for hardware testing. I prefer Windows based apps, but linux works or Apple is acceptable. All hardware types. I would like to get a good base of applications for hardware testing. So if you are someone who could supply some information that would be awesome.
The important one would be Graphics card and Mobos.
