ASUS K53U-YH21 retained legacy Win7 password (not BIOS) after factory restore.

*Ironically it wasn't password-protected before the restore attempt. Which is not to say passwords didn't exist in previous restore points, can't say for sure because this was a purchased second-hand laptop.
*Thus no password disk :(
*The second factory restore attempt went much faster than the first, which suggests to me that indeed it is factory restored behind this password.

What to do?

Thanks.

Are you positive you are doing a factory restore? Because there should be no Windows 7 login password when the hard drive is formatted and Windows 7 is re-installed. Did you instead load a Windows 7 restore point?

If this is a 2nd hand laptop and old restore points were made by the previous own, then it would make sense that there would be a Windows 7 login password. People usually make passwords for their accounts.

Google

ASUS K53U-YH21 Default bios password, its not uncommon for a BIOS to have a default password.

If not try to contact Asus directly on the matter and ask them about the password, if its a default password and explaine the matter to them.

Not a BIOS password. It's a Win7 custom login almost surely from previous owner (as he even installed a password hint).

Yes. That's the odd part of all this -- I've factory restored *twice*, and on this Asus they give a heads-up display so as the restoration progresses you can watch the restore moment-to-moment.

That's why I did the second one -- to watch for any outliers (something like the MBR being ignored/protected). Nothing out of the ordinary. The restore finishes, asks for reboot, and boots right up into legacy Win7 password prompt.
