Hello,

Excuse me if this is a duplicate and has a really easy fix (except going in service) but I don't trust my laptop to work long enough in order to browse the entire forum for related issues. I've looked at some older threads but many didn't relate to my issue.

So, about a week ago while playing a game, the laptop started to overheat really bad and at some point it died. I proceeded to reboot and actually used a room fan to cool it off. I actually managed to drop it to a core temp of about 70 degrees. The next day I really wanted to play again so I used the fan .. but this time the laptop died again, and it didn't start after that. I tried to remove the battery and the power cable, let it cool down for a few hours and still nothing. I didn't use it for a few days after that.

Yesterday I couldn't wait anymore so I took it apart and I found 2 things:

- A very dust clogged cooler (I cleaned it)
- Processors didn't have a proper amount of paste on them (will buy some soon)

To be sure I also reset the CMOS battery. After this inspection and dusting it worked again, staying at 50-65 degrees even in games (I had to try). But this morning it just died (and wouldnt turn on again) while randomly browsing the internet, while it was at about 55 degrees. Now I just tried some baby steps to see what could have led to it shutting off, and it actually started working right after resetting the CMOS battery again.

Now, I'm not an expert, but since the overheating issue seems to be solved, could the inability to power on be related to a corruption in Windows? (I'm running Win 8.1)

Fun fact: I didn't even put all the screws back in yet because I need a fix from a higher power (you guys).

I don't want to go in service unless completely necessary.

Thanks!

Hey again. Wanted to give you guys an update on the issue.Soon after I submitted this question the laptop died again. I pushed the power button and to my surprise it actually turned on ... for another hour. Then it died again. Tried resetting the CMOS battery but it didn't work this time, so my theory just went down the drain.

Any idea would be very helpful. Thanks again!

Update 2: I put some brand new thermal paste and the laptop started working again. As soon as I got into Windows I cleaned the system a bit and removed some malware (mainly RiskWare.IFEOHijack) and it's been going on for 2 days straight without any issues. I think it's fixed.

Nobody replied but thanks anyway :D

I'm back, unfortunately. After running flawlessly for a week I decided to update my graphics driver. Then, 2 days later, after turning it on from Sleep mode, I started to get stripes and blue dots on the screen and then complet blackout. Managed to turn it on by pressing the power button 60 seconds and such, then I got a lot of "graphics driver has failed and succesfuly recovered". I reinstalled the driver and soon after I got a lit of stripes and dots again, then complete darkness. Now it powers on but screen doesn't. Could it be related to my initial issue? Is it time to get a new rig?
