I lost my phone to a washing machine accident and just bought a phone
off ebay with out checking this... the phone is tri-mode 900/1800/1900.
Will this phone work in the Atl or did I buy a pretty brick?

If your intention is to use it on cingular yes. You could use it on
both AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile as they are 1900 Mhz in ATL.

If you want to use Cingular's network in Atlanta you'll need to get
something other than your "pretty brick." T-Mobile has GSM1900 in
Atlanta, but Cingular won't appreciate your roaming full time (if your
SIM is even allowed to register on T-Mo's net).

You can safely use your new phone without fear of reprisals from Cingular.
Cingular has plenty of customers with 900-1800-1900 phones. Cingular has
roaming agreements with 1900MHz carriers even in your home area to
accommodate such customers. For a long time until recently I used a
European tri-band like yours (the superb SE R520m) with a GAIT SIM in it
with no adverse consequnces. This was in Cingular's Michigan market
(800MHz). Go ahead, use your new phone and don't worry.

Just got the phone and it wont lock on to a signal, says "searching"
then says "no carrier". Have also got new sim from cingular to see if
that was the prob.

Could the phone be defective?
