Solved! Audio from speakers to TV

I have an older Sony stereo system that doesn't have many ports, just a 3.5mm jack on the main component. I was looking to link it to my Samsung Smart Tv that has an audio out and an HDMI port on the back. Probably a pretty basic question for anyone who has any knowledge in audio but I am unsure of the hardware required to link the two and get audio flowing thru. Any help is appreciated, thanks

Which Samsung TV model and which Sony stereo model is it?

You want the stereo system to be the source for the TV or vise versa? The TV sound should play on the stereo system ?

If the audio output of the TV is analog you just need a cable.
If the audio output of the TV is digital (most likely optical) then you will need a digital to analog converter plus cables.

the TV only provides HDMI and optical digital output

You will need an extra interface to getting both to work together. An optical (aka toslink) to analogue converter box (DAC) like:
