For years, this common sense law was cockblocked by the "Will somebody please think of the children" brigade composed mainly of Christian lobbies and religious-minded politicians. Legislation was repeatedly vetoed despite extensive research and surveys showing around 90% support from the community.

Even though the average age is now over 30, the previous rules basically treated everyone as if they were 15. If it's too violent for a 15 y.o. then it's the same for everyone over 18. This might of worked in the 1990's when video games were targeted at kids but unlike the religious people who opposed this change, those kids grew up.

Well, when you're the new kid on the block on the entertainment scene, you're going to get the short end of the stick on being scrutinized.

Movies were treated no differently not too long ago.

So, all things in good time.

it is the parent's responsibility to make sure kids do not obtain the 18+ stuff, Not the developer.

Banning 18+ videogames is like banning the sales of condom/porno throughout the country.

these religion minded politician need their brain checked.

Correction to the article, any game rated higher than MA15+ would be refused classification, as m15+ was an advisory classification only (not legally enforceable) whilst MA15+ was restricted to those above 15.

In addition, R18+ is not an advisory or recommendation like what StormOfRazors mentioned for M15+. It is a legal restriction that also places a burden on retailers. This is not the case at all in the US, btw.

The Aussies are worried about video games but the let all kinds of deadly poisonous critters roam everywhere largely unchecked. Glad I don't live there.

I'm still waiting for Left 4 Dead 2 to have the gore limitation removed...

No where near as bad as it's made out to be. Worst thing about living here is the markup we pay for everything..

At least we don't have psychos shooting up primary shools and high schools every other week, and every idiot running around with automatic high powered firearms. I'd much rather have poisonous critters.

Great news. I was wondering when we would see the first of the 18+ games. i look forward to see what is next. Gaming is not just for kids. There is more to gaming than playing Angry birds.

So when can we have our backlog rightfully returned to shelves? still waiting on a few titles like the new Mortal Kombat?

banned the game for encouraging drug use, forcing the developers to change morphine to stimpaks

Remind me not to end up in an Australian hospital then if the government disapproves of morphine for pain relief.

I love Aus, and would love to live there one day, move across the ditch. However, I have always gamed with Aussies, as their servers have the best latency other than the Kiwi servers. I have supported this change for as long as I have gamed.

Hopefully this isn't the last R18 game for you guys.
