Bad overheating issue

Hello everyone. I needs some help regarding an overheating issue on my laptop. on just about every game i try to play, my computer shuts down after a few miniutes of play. here are my specs.

Compaq Presario 2500
Pentium 4 @ 2.2ghz
446mb ram
Ati radeon IGP ###

Are there any programs that i could use to make sure the fans are always running o something like that? or any other tips to keep cool? thanks.
