Battery Not Charging

HP G6 Series Laptop. The AC cord works and it charges the battery for about 10 seconds and ten it stops. I can run the computer without the battery, so I purchased a brand new battery. It does the same thing. It charges for about 10 seconds then it stops. Any thoughts?
