BEC 2000 telstar please help

Hi,

I've been fairly new to the satellite world (only about a year) and
bought a bec 2000 kit that came with a DMS international KU LNBF .5 dB
and the standard dish that comes with these kits...i'm guessing 3 feet.
I have had nothing but trouble with this system. I'm trying to decide
whether it's me, my setup, or one of the equipment. I know many people,
mostly housewives who have had absolutely no problem what so ever with
their system so i'm about to give up on this.

This is somewhat long so please bear with me. I assume many people who
haven't been around dishes and are not certain how things work have gone
through this at one time or another.

background info:
I originally installed this on the side of the house with the view
partially blocked. i managed to get a decent 67% quality signal and was
getting most of the channels i was looking for. however, the same
channel that was working at 67% would drop down to 38% the next day or
even if i would switch around between channels. also there was big
differences between signal quality between the different transponders.

I decided to move the dish to the roof instead with nothing in the path
of the signal thinking that would fix it. I spent 2 days on hte roof
with the reciever and a small tv trying to get a signal. i didn't get
higher than 40%.

after some research, i was told that perhaps the mounting pole was not
leveled and it wasn't. it was slightly off but the mounting pole that
came with the system was kind of flimbsy and beause of the shape of the
roof i could not adjust it so i got an 8 foot metal pipe, dug a hole, put
concrete around it, made sure it was perfectly level, and after drying
connected the dish on top of that pole.

After a day or so adjusting the dish and lnbf, i was able to get a signal
of almost 70% on some transponders with only a 50% on the others. and
again, all of the transponders would drop to 38% just by switching
around. it seems as if once it got a good signal, it would carry over to
another transponder but as soon as it would hit one with a bad signal,
even if i came back to the previous transponder, it would go bad again.

now i can't get anything more than 50% quality and of course no picture.
i've checked all the cords, made sure i've selected ku band lnbf in hte
options. checked the frequencies and symbol rates on the transponders
that i'm intersted in...i don't know what else to do. should I buy
another LNBF? I live in the middle of texas with little interference.

First thing to check is your satellite setup on the receiver. For your LNB,
do you have it set to LNBF? If you do, then you need to change it! the
LNBF setting is for C-band signals. You will most likely need to manually
set your LNB frequencies in your satellite setup. I have the standard Ku
band LNBF, but I had to manually set the frequencies to: 950 - 10750. Your
settings may be different. With your LNBF, their should be settings either
on the LNB or on the box somewhere. I go my settings directly from the LNB
itself. Hope this helps!

We used to sell the BEC DBS 2000 and have quite a bit of experience with
helping novices set up the system.

I would guess that the LNBF is not on frequency. Try changing your LNB LO
frequency up / down 2 or 3 mhz. If you are using a standard lnbf try 10747
or 10753. If Universal try 9747 /10597 or 9753/10603.

The receiver may not be able to Auto Fine Tune the LNBF frequency if it is
to far off. If you find that this fixes the problem you will probably want
to contact your dealer and get another LNBF.

Mounting a post plumb and level certainly helps when locating a satellite,
but the dish could be mounted sideways and receive a great signal if the
LNBF is rotated to match the polarization. A plumb and level post is
necessary for a motorized system!

Remember to peak your quality by rotating the LNBF and pushing it towards or
away from the reflector.

Your LNBF rotation will be very close to a 12 o'clock position for IA5 (T5)
in Texas.

where are you for one and what sat. are you trying for? i had all kinds of
problems like that also. i finally hooked it up to my big dish 10' solid.
and now it is more reliable. the satellite that you are trying to hit is
also a big factor, and you will find some tp's are weaker than others,
maybe the spot beam or just the down link power isn't as high as others.

well as i mentioned i'm in texas which i assume is probably the easiest
to set up since Telstar 5 is right above here. I've played around with
the power settings to the lnb and started getting a good quality for TPX
11 and only that...everything else is 38-44% but transponder 11 is
getting 67% with excellent quality.


what should the voltage settings be by the way? i have 0/14/18 and the
other one asks for 0/12

sorry missed the tx bit,
a lnbf is 14/18 to change the polarity, lnb is 18v and you have a skew
terminal, if your receiver supports this.
the 12v maybe for a switch used to switch several ants to the input, it is
usually a rca connector.
I couldn't tell you if your dish is big enough for your location or not. I
assume you know how to move the lnb around in it's holder to adj the skew.
typically the connector is about 5o'clock in the holder for proper skew.

thanks guys, it's allw orking..i'm getting 66% quality on most Tp's..i've
wasted all weekend trying to set this up so now that it's working i'll
just leave it! i changed the frequencys from 9750-10750 to 950-10750 and
that made a lot of diffrence. the bec 2000 reciever is just not very
good at having the correct preset frequencies.

Changing the frequency to 950 / 10750 is just plain wrong! You are confusing
the IF frequency with the LO frequency.

It appears that you are using a standard LNBF so try the + / - 3mhz shift.
Enter the corrected LO frequency in both the high and low LO frequency rows
and the receiver will lock onto the channel even faster!

OK, let's start at the beginning and check everything.

1. Dish pole must be level and sturdy. No use of 4 x 4
wooden posts, they swell up and will readjust your dish
with humidity changes (without you knowing it's happening!).

2. Reset the receiver to factory specs. If it came from
DMSI, and someone had it before you and screwed up the
receiver settings, taking it back to factory settings
will likely fix the problem, if your settings are off.

3. Telstar-5 (I.A. 5 these days) is fairly difficult to
locate and peak (at least it is here). Once you locate
the satellite and get your dish tightened down securely
(azumith, or left/right) then get a good satellite meter
and peak the dish up/down to make sure you're in the center
of the satellite belt. Try not to touch the left/right
adjustments on the dish, just use the meter for the
up/down. Then "warp" the dish by holding it only on the
sides left and right just a wee bit to see if you get
an increase in signal strength. If you do, loosen the
left/right adjustment and move it in the direction that
increases signal strength until you reach peak ON YOUR
RECEIVER'S SIGNAL STRENGTH DISPLAY. Then use your sat.
meter again to peak up/down.

4. Once the dish is peaked, you still need to peak your
LNBF. Rotate it in it's mount (like the hands of a clock)
left and right for maximum signal ON YOUR RECEIVER'S SIGNAL
STRENGTH DISPLAY. Also push the LNBF in towards and pull it
away from the dish to locate the position of maximum signal
ON YOUR RECEIVER'S SIGNAL STRENGTH DISPLAY. When you reach
the LNBF's "sweet spot", then tighten it down.

There was one instance I had where a dish was damaged in
shipping. If your dish isn't nearly perfectly flat, it will
cause you ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS when you try to aim the
dish, and it doesn't have to be off by much! I could not
even tell by looking at the dish that it was warped/bent.
I put a knee on the bottom of the dish and an elbow into
the top of the dish, and forced it back flat (the top and
bottom were both bent forwards, screwing up the focal point).
Signal strength went from low 40's max to nearly 78, which
is normal for my area (based on my 5 years experience
installing T-5 systems).

In the five years I've been doing these, I've had only
four bad LNBF's, one from lightning, two from the front
cap rotting from solar radiation and allowing water inside,
and one bad from the factory.

Don't screw with the 14/18 volt settings or the 0/12 volt
settings unless you know the reasons for doing so. The
factory settings will work just fine (it sounds like) for
your intents and purposes.

I've found the BEC receivers very reliable, and have many
in the field. The only ones that have required service
were the ones where the customer started messing around
with the remote and got into the menus and screwed things
up. BE WARNED, going to factory default will default to
PAL system, and you'll have to have the commands ready to
switch it back to NTSC.
