"According to other media reports, pollution http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollution in the city yesterday reduced visibility to less than half of a mile, but Chinese Olympic officials are still confident that the skies will be clear for the opening ceremonies and blame the smog on the lack of wind"

And they want it clear in 11 days?? It's not possible. I think it's a wake up call in the Chinese government to start enacting strict environmental laws to curb smog and other pollution. Maybe in 10 years the air will start to look better.

It's not our pollution, we blame God for our smog. It's his fault! Surely we are not responsible for this pollution!

I could give a crap about the Olympics. What I hope is that this will open up the eyes of China to the damage they are doing to their environment and to themselves by having little control over their industrialization. It's not like the world is oblivious to environmentalism like it sorta was when America had it's industrial revolution. What's sad is that what is happening in China goes to show that people put themselves above their earth and all other creatures. We still don't care or believe that we have a responsibility to ourselves to maintain our planet as an intellectually superior species. It starts with environmentalism, it ends by keeping our own numbers in check - and that means somehow limiting how many babies we have. We have no natural predators, and unlike wild animals, we can actually stop disease from spreading through ranks.

Remember China is a communist nation. Don't just place the blame on the Chinese people as they have no say in the matter, and with government control over the media there is no reliable way to measure there beliefs or concerns for the environment. The government officials have absolute power over China's laws, policies, media, education and any other aspect of life they wish. Those officials will only do what will advance their respective positions. If they had the military might the government would not think twice about conquering the nations around them and do the exact same thing with industrial production without concern for the environment.

The only way to reduce Chinese pollution is refuse to buy from China. Strangle the economy to weaken the positions of the officials and to increase civil strife and unrest. Buy products that are manufactured and assembled in countries with better environmental laws.

Not buying products from China would likely worsen their consideration for the environment. At the moment there is at least some concern for the environment by the Chinese government. If their economy starts to stall you can be guaranteed that environmental protection and conservation are going to be the first things to go.
