I have this BenQ laptop to repair. Shuts down at least once a day when
the user is working on it. I have had it on the bench for over a day
with no problem.

User has another laptop, same model that had the same fault. Repairer
ended up replacing virtually everything I am told (was under warranty).

Is this a common fault with this model? Any clues?

Don't know about this specific model but I am going to ask a dumb
question.

If prob is thermal shutdown (sudden black, no blue scr, no nothing),
then u did test the 'top under-load conditions right?

Well, from that point of view, perhaps the post is a bit premature.
I used to have a good diagnostics program and my next step is to
download something that will give this Notebook a really good workout.
Any recommendations?

SpyBot Search and Destroy. The programming is bad enough that both the
CPU and HD will get a workout. Intensive enough for a quick test. You
might try hmonitor.exe for monitoring CPU and HD temperatures if the
laptop is compatible with the program.
