Hello Marv;

I'm going to suggest:
HP Pavilion dv7 Quad Edition 2nd Gen Sandy Bridge laptop i7 2630QM CPU, 6GB RAM, 640GB 7200rpm HDD and 17" 1600x900 LCD w/Mobility Radeon HD 6570 graphics $950
Configuration change to the 7200rpm 640GB HDD. No USB 3.0.
Keep an eye out for updated deals at LogicBuy or Dealigg

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-560z desktop $700 (coupon expires on 22 Jan or after $400 uses)
Phenom II X6 1045T hex-core 2.7GHz CPU, 8GB RAM 1TB 7200rpm HDD,

USB 3.0 available in the +$30 15-1 Media Reader option. You could also add a USB 3.0 PCIe card yourself.
If the coupon code is still valid with upgrades I'd suggest the 3.0Ghz X6-1075T +$60, and the 2509m 25-inch 1920x1080 LCD monitor +$250
About $1029
