I am considering buying a pair of floor standing speakers and a receiver to go with them. I don't really know where to start looking and what brands are the best? And my budget is around $800-$1200

what country?

in europe the wharfdale diamond speakers 10 series are very good however they are quite overpriced (like double!) here in america. what gets recommended may depend on your location.

what are you looking to do with said speakers?

music? (what type?) movies? gaming?

--

new or used? sometimes you can get a great deal on speakers if you get them pre-owned.

--

why a receiver instead of just an amp?

if you're looking for cheap, loud yet with decent sound sony floor standing speakers arent bad. you can get a pair for a little over $200 which leaves room for a subwoofer and a receiver. we have a pair in the other room and they work great for tv even without a sub! they arent going to win any awards but are a nice...
What are you looking to do with this, will it be for just music or are you planning on movie/tv setup also? Also, are you willing to use a setup with bookshelves + sub instead of floor standers?

Ya we need more details like how big a space to fill audio with , etc Also where u at also plays a part as some brands are not available in certain parts of the world

in some cases going with some bookshelf speakers and a sub might be the better route. we need to know more details from you.
