5.1 setup, for example the z506.
+surround sound, easy hook up, easy to find
-audio quality less than hifi, non upgradeable

2.1 setup, for example z523, z623
+better audio quality than low end speakers, easy to hook up, easy to find
-audio quality less than hifi, non upgradeable

2.0 setup (will lack bass though), for example t40
+decent quality, does not take up much space, easy to find
-audio quality less than hifi, poor bass output

2.0 hifi setup with amp, for example lepai2020 paired with b652, mb42, bs22
+decent audio quality, small size, more power output than pc speakers, lots of choices in the passive speaker market
-requires amplifier, bass output is fair but subwoofer suggested...

above average 2.0 powered speakers, for example mackie cr3

you can always pair up a powered subwoofer with any hifi speaker sets easily in the future. you could do it fairly easy with a pc 2.0 set as well however given difference in output power it may overwhelm pc speakers.
