Best smartphone for around $500

What's the best smartphone for around $400-$500? The things I really want are: a great camera (if I can), great sound, decent battery life. I either want an unlocked one or one that has a good contract in Australia with a lot of data, since I'll be using the internet a lot.

Is the Nexus 5 available in Australia? That phone delivers at the price point.

I had an iPhone 5S and my friend's Nexus 5's camera beat the iPhone's in nearly everything. Battery life isn't stellar, but should be more than enough, and as for sound quality, not stellar, but good enough again.

If you can get your hands on a used htc one m8, then you be set
Sound I think its the best one out there, camera is really good and battery is also really good but relative to wha you do on it, idk if its available in Australia tho
