biggest / fastest hard drive (for t40)

I have a t40 with the 80 gig 4200 RPM drive.

I'd like to improve overall system performance. I have plenty of RAM,
upgrading the CPU seems like a longshot (though I'd be pleasantly
surprised if the new 2 GHz Pentium-M would work), so I thinking maybe
disk drive.

I'm disappointed that IBM is not offering anything newer than the 60
gig, 7200 RPM drive. Besides being of lower capacity, the difference in
performance is uninspiring:

Naturally the lower density offsets the higher rotation speed somewhat.

The 60 gig drive has been available for ages, by now I hoped for
something more like 120 gigs at 7200 rpm.

The best I could find is a new seagate 100 GB, 7200 rpm
<http://www.seagate.com/newsinfo/products/notebook/>
But it doesn't seem to be for sale yet.

Get two of them and put the other one in the T40's Ultrabay2000 (with
the 2nd HDD adapter). This way you'll have 120 GB / 7200 rpm ;-)

Not 7200RPM. The biggest is 60GB made by hitachi and it hasn't been out too
terribly long.

Seagate has announced a 100GB 7200 rpm drive for availability sometime this
year. Doesn't help you if you need one now, however.

I've got one in the Select Bay carrier of my Tohsiba 5205 that has a
manufacture date of 12/03. In the computer industry 7 months is a lifetime.

The one I have mounted internally was manufactured in 5/04. Yep, 120GB of
7200RPM hard drives in one laptop. :)

Could you please tell us the model number of
this 120GB drive? I do not see anything like
it on either the US or Japan Toshiba web sites.

The largest 2.5" drive announced and shipping
by Toshiba is the MK-1031GAS. This is a 100GB
4200rpm drive with an 8MB cache:

http://tinyurl.com/2pmeq

or

http://tinyurl.com/3n25v

It was announced on April 22, 2004.

There can be no question that its performance
cannot come close to the 50GB/7200rpm/16MBcache
Toshiba MK-5024GAY. BTW this drive is not listed
on Toshiba's US web site, but is available from
a number of mail order sources.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

7 months and only two manufactures doesn't equate to terribly long for me
when 5400 and 4200RPM drives have been out for so long. Just a perspective
thing, but the point still remains 60GB is the biggest you can currently
get, not 80GB
