black screen, connect to tv

So my screen is black, the laptop powers up, but the screen is black, guessing it is the back light. What I need to know is there a way to connect the laptop with the tv using the vgr cord with a black screen? I have had the computer sense early 2010 or late 2009. help please

It you still hear the laptop / hardisk booting, there is a good chance, that it works with an external screen. Just connect it to the tv via vga (assuming, your tv has a vga input). You may have to press a function key on your laptop to switch the output from internal to external.
