Bridge camera or camcorder better choice?

i'm looking to buy daughter entry level camera to shoot video of her new baby. i have looked at Sony HDRCX405 camcorder and Nikon Coolpix L840. After leaving Best Buy i'm more confused about which one to get. Will the Nikon take as good a video as the Sony camcorder? If so seems the Nikon will be the better one to get for more versatility. Price is about the same, $130 for Sony, $170 for Nikon. Any help on this decision would be greatly appreciated!

1) Never go to best buy for cameras, they have outdated devices that are very expensive.
2) Why bother? Most people use their cellphones for video nowadays, why not buy her a nice 64 or 128gb micro-sdxc (assuming her phone supports it) and something like Adobe Premier Elements to help her manage and improve the video instead?
