Hello all,
I’ve had a bit of a shop around and I’m liking the look of the Clevos. But I thought I’d pick the brains of the people here, see if anyone has any better suggestions.
1. What is your budget?
None in mind. Getting the right laptop is more important that what the laptop costs.
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15"
3. What screen resolution do you want?
Doesn’t matter.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Doesn't matter
5. How much battery life do you need?
Doesn’t matter.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low, Medium or High)?
Medium/High @ 1366x768 resolution (the resolution of my TV, which it will be plugged into when I’m gaming)
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
General internetting.
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
180Gb (or bigger) SSD.
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
pcspecialist.co.uk / Cyberpowersystems.co.uk / anywhere else anyone suggests.
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
2 years probably
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer, Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
None
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I have no specific loyalty/hatred of any brands. I've been looking at a lot of Clevos but not out of brand loyalty, mostly because they are good for price/performance.
13. What country do you live in?
UK
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusIII-15/ is my current favourite. Spec it with a 180Gb SSD, Core i5, 8Gb of RAM and remove the Windows 7 licence (I already have a spare W7 licence) and it comes to just over £700 (Or about $1100, although bear in mind that UK prices include tax so it’s $930 without tax)
At 1366x768 resolution, an i5 + 650m seems like more than enough grunt to run modern games at decent settings, I don’t see that more powerful components would benefit me much, although I’m open to persuasion on any component. I did look at the Lenovo Y580 with the 660m but it's £150 more. The 660m generally appears to be only slightly (~10 %) more powerful than the 650m but significantly more expensive.
