Buying iphone on craigs list?

if i purchase an iphone from sprint, they require a data plan (unless i pay like 500 dollars for the iphone).
but if i purchased an iphone from craigs list, can i transfer my sprint number to that phone, and not have to pay monthly data? would i be able to call/text with normal charges and use wifi at home and school?

If the ESN id bad then its useless for callling and texting with any carrier
