Hello guys, computer engineering student here. Next semester I'll be taking programming and other classes. My parents told me to pick a laptop and that I have a starting budget of PhP 30,000 (≈$670). With the money I've got saved, that amount should go up to PhP 50,000 (≈$1,100). What laptop do you guys suggest I get?

Approximate Purchase Date: Six Months or less

Budget Range: $600-$1,100

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, Video Editing, Rendering, Programming

Location: Philippines

Parts Preferences: i7 at or near 3ghz, nvidia 860M preferable but not necessary

Your Monitor Resolution: 14"-17" 1080p preferable but I can work with 768p

Additional Comments: I use Blender, Source Film Maker, VirtualDub and I play some BF3 and I plan to play Sims4, I'm fine with high-medium settings

Reason for Upgrading: I have a crap Lenovo G450 that's been sitting somewhere because of a broken motherboard.

Hey itsameSMB,

I recommend this ASUS laptop as the best choice within your budget - (http://www.amazon.com/N550JK-DS71T-Full-HD-Touchscreen-Laptop-Aluminum-Body/dp/B00IAA5BSS/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1407966146&sr=1-5&keywords=asus+laptop) - $1,061.72 and free shipping.

It has an i7 4700-HQ Processor with a 850M (not as powerful as the 860M, but still very capable of modern gaming), 8GB of RAM, and an IPS display.

If you would like to pay a little more, you can get the Lenovo Y50 - (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/) - $1,139.00, which is a great price for a 860M. However, the biggest downside is the screen quality, which some people have commented on.

For the 860M, you won't find a better deal than the Lenovo Y50 and the reviews are generally very positive. The ASUS lacks in performance with the 850M, but it has an attractive IPS display. It's definitely up to preference and how much weight you put on screen display and GPU.

Let me know if you have any questions! :)

I was actually looking at getting the Y50 before but I wasn't sure if there were any Lenovo stores that sold them in the Philippines. Guess I'm getting that one then. But if the N550JK has a version without the touchscreen that would be perfect for me.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the N550JK has a non-touchscreen version. Unfortunately, most mid to high-end consumer laptops from ASUS have touch-screen as an added bonus.

I'm not sure if Lenovo has a store in the Philippines or if they ship internationally. Sorry :(
