Can a dvd player be used on a laptop

Hello,
My Acer Laptop no longer reads DVDs; can a DVD Player be hooked up to a laptop and DVDs then played on the laptop?

Maybe, if you have a t.v. input(like a TV Tuner). most laptops do not have the required inputs. There are usb dvd drives, and replacement laptop drives.
