Can I receive sound but have the picture dark on my Insignia TV without a separate receiver?

I don't think you can do that. Even with a separate receiver you would not be able to get sound without picture for the internal tuner or smart functions of the TV.
If you use an external sound system you can connect the audio output of your external sources directly to it so you could have sound but no picture. If the sources don't have audio outputs you could use an HDMI input selector with audio extraction like this one
