Yes it can. In fact if the battery is failing that much, it's the right thing to do.

Good advice.

In fact I remove my batteries, run the device on main power and only put the battery in when I am taking it out.

The battery lasts much longer because It is not being constantly charged.

I do not care what the manufacturers say, leaving the battery in (unless your using it each time you go away from the power point) leads to a short battery life.

Remember ... they want to sell you batteries ... money.
