Can u hook up a 2nd hard drive to a gateway laptop

ok i have a older gateway laptop and the hard drive is about to fail so "i need to find a ghost what i can put on a dvd and boot from there" so ive been told can any one help

how do you know the drive is about to fail...?

more importantly, if you know that, why don't you buy a new one and install it, then copy your data from the "failing" one, so that you don't lose it "when" it fails...
