Can you use a monitor as a 2nd display for a laptop?

Could you use a monitor alongside a laptop as a 2nd display so like it's not mirroring or duplicating it. Basically could you extend the view for better multitasking ?? Thanks

Depending on the laptop, usually. There would be a port on the side or back. VGA, HDMI, or DisplayPort.
Somewhere on the keyboard is a Fn button to switch modes. Laptop, external only, or both.
