Can't boot from USB on Windows 8 laptop!

I have an HP 2000 Windows 8 laptop. It got a virus a long time ago, but I'm trying to fix it. I can't enter Safe Mode or boot the laptop to where I can get rid of the virus. I have created a bootable usb. I even reformatted it to Fat32. I also tried changing the boot settings to where the USB is recognized first. Nothing has worked. It'll go to the Windows logo, do the spinning dot thing, then black screen. I'm at my wit's end and I'm no expert on laptops, I'm just trying my best. Can someone PLEASE tell me what I'm doing wrong? It'll check the media and say "Fail" a lot then try to go to the Windows logo again. I will admit, it's five years old, but my new laptop just won't cut it for me and I want my old one back.

Edit: Performed a check, saw that the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed. Does that mean something?

I find it rather odd that it won't even load in "Safe Mode" or allow you to reset it. Either of those should work, virus or not, since the are done before windows starts to load. Unless the problem is something hardware rather than software.

Replace the hard drive. If under warranty, contact the manufacturer. If not, then you can either try doing it yourself or take it to a local tech.
