Hey guys i have this setup, i bought a home cinema kit 5.1 thinking it was just connect to tv and the sound will do 5.1. But it is stereo ;/

Now i bought a sound card to connect pc to blu ray, i use spdif but one more time it only passes stereo.

Really don't know what to do anymore. Any help? thanks

Solution

S/PDIF can only handle the following formats:

Mono, Stereo, AC3 (Dolby Digital), and DTS.

S/PDIF cannot handle multichannel audio beyond stereo (two channels). Transmitting more than two channels over S/PDIF can only be accomplished by first encoding those channels into a bitstream, either Dolby Digital or DTS. The only way to do this in real time on a PC is with a sound card that supports Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect.

If you are trying to receive digital audio from your BluRay player and play it through speakers connected to your PC, this is a waste of time. Most consumer sound cards do not support decoding digital audio, only encoding it.

What you should have is the following:

PC -> HDMI -> Home Theater
BluRay -> HDMI -> Home Theater
Home Theater -> HDMI -> TV
Home Theater -> Speaker Wire -> Speakers

If you have a modern graphics card in your PC you can use the HDMI output as an audio target as well as a video target. This means that you can have both a regular monitor and a TV connected to your PC. You may also have your existing sound card and headset (if you have one) as well as your 5.1 configuration.

I had a very nice setup just like the one above, worked wonderfully. I could use my 5.1 headset (attached via 3.5mm jacks) and monitor (attached via DVI-D) to play games at my desk, and then swing around to my couch to watch movies on my home theatre which was connected via HDMI.

I understand what u say, but my home teather is my blu ray, all speakers are conected to blu ray and it only have one hdmi output. The best solution was conect my pc and box to tv, and pass the sound by optical cable but it only passes stereo.

I see.

There are only two solutions that I can think of.

1. Purchase a Creative Labs sound card that supports Dolby Digital Live and use that to encode the sound that would normally go to the speakers (6 channel audio) into Dolby Digital which can then be sent over S/PDIF. I've used this before, the audio quality is not very good.

2. Purchase a basic 5.1 home theatre receiver that supports HDMI 1.4 as well as Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. I recommend this one.

Solution
If i buy a receiver can i conect all the sound i have? Last week k read that some player cannot connect a receiver. If yes maybe i buy a receiver that is the best option for sure.

Double check with your BluRay player's manual to make sure that it supports external speakers connected via HDMI. Samsung is generally pretty good about this though so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

i will try go to the store to change this kit for a av receiver htp 071 with 5.1 too.
What do yout think? is a good avr?

That actually looks pretty decent. It supports Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and while it's not explicitly stated it seems to be HDMI 1.4 compliant. Certainly not bad for the price. You'll lose the ability to play BluRay disks until you purchase a BluRay player though, but these are cheap and you do not need one that has a built-in amplifier.
